A strategy to read a book in a foreign language

I want to give you some instructions BEFORE you start your reading and I beg you to read this carefully!!!

You may think, that this is an exercise in which you will  have to look up many words and do a lot of translation in your head.

BUT: This is exactly what it is NOT!!!!!

You have reached a level where you can start reading books.
The point ist to learn how to read them independently!
The following points are important, trust me! It may seem strange and uncomfortable at first but will pay in the end!

·         Reading a book is not like working with a text and exercises in a textbook with units! It is about the joy of reading! Even if you may not feel that in the beginning and you may be frustrated at first. Don’t be! Feel the pride in what you have understood! Not the frustration in what you haven’t understood. Accept the fact that you will not understand every word! That is important! You will see how you improve by simply carrying on with your reading and at the end of each chapter you will see how good it feels to have come this far!
·         This means: Please do NOT have a dictionary ANYWHERE near you!!!
·        Maybe you write down words that you feel are important to know and you can look them up once you have finished the chapter.
·         This means: if you come across a sentence that you don’t understand, you can read it all over again, yes, but please DO NOT LOOK UP WORDS!! You simply CARRY ON READING!
·         Once you have finished the chapter you will find yourself surprised to see how much you have understood!
·         Now you can look up your list of words. And now you have the option to read the chapter again. But only if you WANT TO!!!!
In fact, this is not much different from reading in your own native language! But here we don’t feel the necessity to understand each and every word. We simply accept it!
And maybe it is of some comfort for you to know, I don’t understand every single word myself J
So, enjoy the book and your progress!!

"Language is the road map of a culture.
It tells you where its people come from and where they are going."
